SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT. December 06, 2009

Two elderly ladies had been friends for many decades. Over the years they had shared all kinds of activities and adventures. Lately, their activities had been limited to meeting a few times a week to play cards.
One day they were playing cards when one looked at the other and said, "Now don't get mad at me... I know we've been friends for a long time... but I just can't think of your name! I've thought and thought, but I can't remember it. Please tell me what your name is."
Her friend glared at her. For at least three minutes she just stared and glared at her. Finally she said, "How soon do you need to know?"

OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, UNIVERSAL KING, November 22, 2009

GOD’S CHAIR
A man's daughter had asked the local pastor to come and pray with her father. When the pastor arrived, he found the man lying in bed with his head propped up on two pillows and an empty chair beside his bed. The pastor assumed that the old fellow had been informed of his visit.
"I guess you were expecting me," he said. "No, who are you?" "I'm the new associate at your local church," the pastor replied. "When I saw the empty chair, I figured you knew I was going to show up." "Oh yeah, the chair," said the bedridden man. "Would you mind closing the door?" Puzzled, the pastor shut the door.
"I've never told anyone this, not even my daughter," said the man. "But all of my life I have never known how to pray. At church I used to hear the pastor talk about prayer, but it always went right over my head. I abandoned any attempt at prayer," the old man continued, "until one day about four years ago my best friend said to me, 'Joe, prayer is just a simple matter of having a conversation with Jesus. Here's what I suggest: Sit down on a chair; place an empty chair in front of you, and in faith see Jesus on the chair. It's not spooky because he promised, 'I'll be with you always. 'Then just speak to him and listen in the same way you're doing with me right now.' So, I tried it and I've liked it so much that I do it a couple of hours very day. I'm careful, though. If my daughter saw me talking to an empty chair, she'd either have a nervous breakdown, or send me off to the funny farm."
The pastor was deeply moved by the story and encouraged the old guy to continue on the journey. Then he prayed with him, and returned to the church. Two nights later the daughter called to tell the pastor that her daddy had died that afternoon. "Did he seem to die in peace?" he asked. "Yes, when I left the house around two o'clock, he called me over to his bedside, told me one of his corny jokes, and kissed me on the cheek. When I got back from the store an hour later, I found him dead. But there was something strange, in fact, beyond strange, really weird. Apparently, just before Daddy died, he leaned over and rested his head on a chair beside the bed."

COSTING NO LESS THAN EVERYTHING
Sometimes love costs no less than everything. Parents know this in bringing up children in love; and then it costs a lot to let them go, as they make their way through life, finding their own feet, forming their own families. And the love of God opens the door to people who are poor; if we fail to recognise the poor in our world we are missing God. And we know that a passion for wealth can close us off from other people as we fail to see their needs and get into competition with them. The call of the Lord is to give of ourselves for others, even when it hurts; and into a love which shares with those who are poor. His love calls us, and when we live in this love of giving and receiving, we are the most blessed of people.

A Prayer For My Friend

Dear God, With this prayer
I call to mind my friends.
I ask for Your blessings on them.
May angels fill their nights
And bless their days.

May they find joy and peace and harmony.
May I be a source of happiness in their lives.
May our bond be strong and based on truth.

May they always know that

Thank you God.

What can I do when I feel the worlds harsh breath and know
That if I stay too long in it’s path
My path shall be burned up also.
I must go back to the land again
And find the eagle at home with the rock.
I must climb to the mountaintop
And find the spot where the river begins.
I must lie quietly beside the earth
And find the warmth of its heart.
I must turn my vision to the sky
And find the purpose of clouds.
Then trouble seems far away
And the breath which consumes all beauty
Has passed right over me.

26th Sunday in Ordinary Time, September 27, 2009

Our true home is in the present moment.
To live in the present moment is a miracle.
The miracle is not to walk on water.
The miracle is to walk on the green Earth
in the present moment,
To appreciate the peace and beauty
that are available now.
Peace is all around us –
In the world and in nature-
And within us-
In our bodies and our spirits.
Once we learn to touch this peace,
We will be healed and transformed.
It is not a matter of faith;
It is a matter of practice.

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time. 30th August 2009

THE GIFT OF THE FULL SENSES
See the Comeragh Mountains and lovely Tory Hill,
See the winding river flowing by the mill,
See the pearled spider lace woven ‘ere the night,
Dearest Lord we thank you for the gift of sight
And may God bless those who have never seen
Their own dear valley of verdant green.

Hear the plaintive cuckoo and the thrush’s song,
Hear the dawning chorus of the feathered throng,
List to their melody, music to the ear,
Dearest Lord we thank you for the gift to hear.
And may God bless those who have never heard
The purest notes of a songster bird.

Touch is a precious gift and gives each message plain,
Be it perceiving some pleasure, or of pain.
Blest be this facility ever giving much.
Dearest Lord we thank you for the gift of touch
And may God bless those who cannot feel the touch
Of the gentlest hand, nor a manly clutch.

Tasty food and vitals gratify for sure,
Hunger and misfortune haunt the world’s poor,
Old wise philosophy, “It’s sinful food to waste”,
Dearest God we thank you for the gift of taste
And may God bless those with dire finance faced
And with the scavenger dine on midden waste.

Smell the perfumed orchid and scented garden flower,
Inhale the aroma wafting from the bower,
Where the bees steal sweet nectar from every blossom bell.
Dearest Lord we thank you for the gift of smell
And may God bless those who’ll never know the smell
Of the Tiger Lily, nor the Pimpernel.

GOD Said NO
I asked God to take away my habit. God said, No.
It is not for me to take away, but for you to give it up.

I asked God to make my handicapped child whole. God said, No.
His spirit is whole, his body is only temporary.

I asked God to grant me patience. God said, No.
Patience is a by-product of tribulations; It isn't granted, it is learned.

I asked God to give me happiness. God said, No.
I give you blessings; Happiness is up to you.

I asked God to spare me pain. God said, No.
Suffering draws you apart from worldly cares and brings you closer to me.

I asked God to make my spirit grow. God said, No.
You must grow on your own, but I will prune you to make you fruitful.

I asked God for all things that I might enjoy life. God said, No.
I will give you life, so that you may enjoy all things.

I asked God to help me LOVE others, as much as He loves me.
God said...Ahhhh, finally you have the idea.

CUPCAKES
There once was a little boy who wanted to meet God. He knew it was a long trip to where God lived, so he packed his suitcase with cupcakes, several cans of root beer and started on his journey. When he had gone about three blocks, he saw an elderly woman. She was sitting on a park bench watching the pigeons. The boy sat down next to her and opened his suitcase. He was about to take a drink from his root beer when he noticed the lady looked hungry so he offered her a cupcake. She gratefully accepted and smiled at him. Her smile was so wonderful that he wanted to see it again, so he offered a root beer as well. Once again she smiled at him. The boy was delighted! They sat there all afternoon eating and smiling without saying a word.
As it began to grow dark, the boy realized how tired he was and wanted to go home. He got up to leave but before he had gone no more than a few steps, he turned around and ran back to the old woman, giving her a big hug. She gave him her biggest smile ever. When the boy arrived home his Mother was surprised by the look of joy on his face. She asked, "What has made you so happy today?" He replied, "I had lunch with God." Before his mother could respond he added, "You know what? She's got the most beautiful smile in the whole world!" Meanwhile, the old woman, also radiant with joy, returned to her home. Her son was stunned by the look of peace on her face. He asked, "Mother, what has made you so happy today?" She replied, "I ate cupcakes in the park with God." And before her son could reply, she added, "You know, he is much younger than I expected."
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring; all of which have the potential to turn life around.
People come into our lives for a reason,
a season, or a lifetime....
Take no one for granted and embrace all equally with joy!

THE TROUBLE TREE
A carpenter was hired to help restore an old farmhouse. He had just finished a rough first day on the job, during which a flat tire made him lose an hour of work, his electric saw quit, and his ancient pickup truck refused to start. While his employer was driving him home, he sat in stony silence. On arriving, he issued an invitation to his employer to meet his family. As they walked towards the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching tips of the branches with both hands. When opening the door, he underwent an amazing transformation. His tanned face was wreathed in smiles and he hugged his two small children and gave his wife a kiss.
Afterward he walked his employer to the car. They passed the tree and his employer's curiosity got the better of him. He asked him about what he had seen him do earlier.
"Oh, that's my trouble tree," he replied. "I know I can't help having troubles on the job, but one thing's for sure, troubles don't belong in the house with my wife and the children. So I just hang them up on the tree every night when I come home. Then in the morning I pick them up again."
"Funny thing is," he smiled, "when I come out in the morning to pick 'em up, there aren't nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before."

FROM NEXT WEEK THE GRAPEVINE WILL BE PRINTED EVERY 3 WEEKS UNTIL SEPTEMBER.

WALK FOR LOURDES/HOSPICE FUND
We would like to thank all who helped in any way to make Sunday, June 14 a really great day. Before we can make a final decision about the money raised, we need to get back the remaining sponsor cards and donations. To date just half of these have been returned.

MOONCOIN BOYS’ NATIONAL SCHOOL
Recently the grounds of the Boys’ School have been seriously damaged by young people, not only drinking and leaving cans scattered around, but also by smashing glass and bottles on the basketball court. We also would remind everybody that CCTV cameras are in operation all round our school, 24 hours per day all year round.

The Body And Blood of Christ, June 14, 2009

PONDEROUS MOMENTS
Maybe God wants us to meet a few wrong people before meeting the right one so that when we finally meet the right person, we will know how to be grateful for that gift.
When the door of happiness closes, another opens, but often times we look so long at the closed door that we don't see the one which has been opened for us.
The best kind of friend is the kind you can sit on a porch and swing with, never say a word, and then walk away feeling like it was the best conversation you've every had.
It's true that we don't know what we've got until we lose it, but it's also true that we don't know what we've been missing until it arrives.
Giving someone all your love is never an assurance that they'll love you back! Don't expect love in return; just wait for it to grow in their heart but if it doesn't, be content it grew in yours. It takes only a minute to get a crush on someone, an hour to like someone, and a day to love someone, but it takes a lifetime to forget someone.

Thanks to one and all who partook and gave a great helping hand in our celebration of the Fun Day on Sunday May 31. Everything went so well - from the celebration and participation in the 11.00 a.m. Mass to the Fun Day in the Parish Hall and surroundings. The Lord blessed us with a wonderful day. Thanks again to everybody.

PRAYER FOR THE MIDDLE-AGED

Lord, you know I am growing older,
Keep me from becoming talkative and possessed with the idea that I must express myself on every subject.
Release me from the craving
to straighten out everyone’s affairs.
Keep me from the recitation of endless details,
Give me wings to get to the point.
Seal my lips when I am inclined
to tell of my aches and pains.
They are increasing with the years and my love to speak of them grows sweeter as time goes by.
Teach me the glorious lesson
that occasionally I may be wrong,
Make me thoughtful and not nosey, helpful but not bossy,
With my vast store of wisdom and experience
it does seem a pity not to use it all.
But, you know, Lord,
that I want a few friends at the end.

Pentecost Sunday, May 31, 2009

Today I put aside my “when this happens” and my “if only this could be” and my “when things get better” and my “soon as I have this.”

I am going to harvest what I now have, gather all the many gifts that are already mine.

I am going to observe what has been put in my granary of my heart and marvel at the abundance.

I will stand before this heap of blessings and take a long grateful look. I will say farewell to my “when” and be thankful for what is.
