MOONDHARRIG PLAYERS
‘Happy Birthday Dear Alice’ by Bernard Farrell will be performed by the group in Mooncoin Hall from Tuesday, March 1 to Sunday, March 6 at 8pm nightly. The Play tells the story of a family whose Mother - Alice played by Cara O’Mahoney lives alone and needs looking after. The crux is that the views of the family regarding the solution to this problem do not in any way coincide with the wishes of Alice. Outside influences in the form of Jimmy Heffernan (Frank Hogan) plays a large part in bringing the matter to a conclusion – a satisfactory one for Alice but not so acceptable to her bossy daughter Barbara, played by Martina Nathan, or to her selfish and shallow son Barry (Seamus Kearns). Helena Walsh-Kiely (Sandy) and Stephen Kearns (Cormac) play the girl-friend and husband of the pair of siblings.

SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, Feb 13, 2011

Thought for the week:
Never forget that the darkest hour is only sixty minutes.

Last month the Irish Bishops have published;
The National Directory for Catechesis – ‘Share the Good News’
Over the next few weeks we will take extracts from the directory to give you a flavour of the intention of this new venture for catechesis.
This is a short extract taken from the preface:
“ It is with a strong sense of gratitude for the blessing that Jesus Christ has been in the life of the Irish people down through the centuries, that the Irish Episcopal Conference publishes this National Directory for Catechesis in Ireland. We are convinced that the gifts of goodness, healing and peace that Christ offers the Church and all peoples today have power to teach us, and future generations, how to live generous, just and committed lives with one another in God’s all-embracing love:
I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for welfare … to give you a future with hope … When you search for me, you will find me; if you seek me with all your heart. (Jeremiah 29: 11-13). In the spirit of the Second Vatican Council, and of the pastoral attentiveness to catechesis with which the church has concerned.
The Christian faith, like the word of God, is something alive and active. Christ has set our hearts on fire. Like so many in the Gospel stories, we too have heard Jesus calling us. He continues to reach out, drawing near to us in our own particular places. He is conscious of each person in their need and he addresses us personally. This is his way. He came among us in our humanity and he remains with us always. Of the sick man at Bathzatha he asks with intent: ‘Do you want to be well again?’ (John 5:6). He surprises the Samaritan woman at the well, it upsets his companions when he makes a request of her: ‘Give me a drink’ (John 4:7). And to the rich young man, on whom he looked lovingly, he offers an unanswered challenge: ‘Come, follow me’ (Mark 10:21). Despite our weakness and the inadequacies of our efforts, we too have felt his closeness and known his care. He has touched our very being. As in Galilee two thousand years ago, Jesus Christ offers us, now, his healing and forgiveness, comfort and challenge, the tenderness and pain of all-embracing love, and a peace in God’s presence rooted in commitment to one another and to whole- hearted service of our neighbour. (Taken from ‘Share the Good News’ National Directory for Catechesis in Ireland)

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, Feb 6, 2011

REFLECT THE LIGHT
In an article entitled “Reflect the Light2, Roble Nebres tells us about the time he drove to the summit of Mt. Haleakala. After watching the sunset it became dark and he became anxious about the descent down the steep, winding road. When he left the parking lot the median strips on the road suddenly came alive with reflectorized lights. They provided a much needed directional guide on the mountain road.
The reflectors illuminated the way for Nebres, who made his descent down the treacherous mountain road. The reflectors, however, were useless without his headlights shining on them. The light they gave depended on the light from another source. Otherwise they could not help him.
When Jesus told his disciples they were the “light of the world”, he meant they were to be reflectors of the light of God. God is the illuminating source. God provides the light that is reflected from us. And God needs us to be reflectors of God’s light to a world of darkness.
Keith Wagner, Are We Hiding Our Faith?

FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, Jan 30, 2011

FEBRUARY 1: St Brigid – Mary of the Gael –is second only to St. Patrick in the esteem of the Irish people. St. Brigid was born in 454. She lived a life consecrated to God, it is said she probably received spiritual formation from St. Mel and stayed for a while in Ardagh. Others began to follow her example and later she founded a monastery in Kildare. She is renowned for her hospitality, almsgiving and care for the sick, and her love of nature and animals.
PRAYER
St. Brigid you were a woman of peace.
You brought harmony where there was conflict.
You brought light to darkness.
You brought hope to the downcast.
May the mantle of your peace cover those who are troubled and anxious,
and may peace be firmly rooted in our hearts and in our world.
Inspire us to act justly and to reverence all God has made.
Brigid you were a voice for the wounded and the weary.
Strengthen what was weak within us.
Calm us into quietness that heals and listens.
May we grow each day into greater wholeness in mind, body and spirit. Amen.
FEBRUARY 3: St. Blaise was born in the early 4th century. He was bishop of Sebaste in Armenia and was later martyred for the faith.
Since the eighth century he has been venerated as the patron of those who suffer from disease of the throat. He is said to have healed a boy who was choking. The blessing of St. Blaise is a sign of our faith in God’s protection and love, for us and the sick.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, we pray through the intercession of St. Blaise
Heal all who are suffering from disease of the throat
And protect us who pray to you at this time.
We pray for _________ may s/he be restored to full health.
We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Enclosed in the Grapevine is the synopsis of the questionnaire which you received last year. We thank all who responded. The Parish Council will take on board the suggestions you made. Next weekend a leaflet will be distributed in all the churches inviting volunteers to participate in the different ministries in the Church and Parish. It’s an opportunity to make a new beginning and for all to take more responsibility for the life of the Parish and what happens in our Church. Fr Liam Power will join us, the Parish Council, for training and planning on Friday & Saturday 4/5 February, as we plan for the future.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
Refuse to be discouraged when stormy clouds come your way,
but trust in tomorrow you’ll find a brighter day.
Refuse to be discouraged when you’re faced with doubts and fears,
but keep on pressing onward for the joy beyond the tears.
Refuse to be discouraged, and in time you’ll understand
that if you keep believing things will work out…. Just as planned
(Amanda Bradley)
