KILIMANJARO DIRECT SCHOOL PROJECT
www.kilimanjarodirect.org
Established in 2005, by Secondary teacher, Sheila Ryan, “Kilimanjaro Direct” is an Irish-based, registered charity. To date the charity has distributed food, installed water and built houses for people with disability, who were living in mud huts. At the moment, the charity is building a Primary school at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, which will educate very poor children, whose parents cannot afford to send them to school. In October 2010 twenty three people went out from Offaly & South Kilkenny on a building blitz. A power of work was done – more to do! For more information log on to: www.seikierans.ie. We are hoping to send about 10 plasterers out in the month. If you are interested please contact me (Fr Peter) on 086-8265955. We need to have something definite by the first week of December. Any suggestions, or help for fund raising would be most welcome. Gift token cards will be available for Christmas if you wish to give to a friend rather than a present. After spending some time there you would realise how much and how well off we are. All help and any help much appreciated. Looking forward to hearing from you.

THIRTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, October 31, 2010

Farewells are not easy... .... ... The bells of the three churches: Carrigeen, Kilnaspic and Mooncoin have called me to lead you in prayer for the past six years. Now the bell of the Church of St. Kieran in the parish of Seir Kieran will call me to continue to lead people in worship. It was at Seir Kieran that St. Kieran heard the bell ring and caused him to build a monastic settlement there. Seir Kieran became the seat of the diocese of Ossory. Life in the parish of Mooncoin has been wonderful for me. I have experienced tremendous support from the faith of each one of you and I thank you. My prayer of thanksgiving is joined with St. Paul in chapter three of his letter to the Ephesians:
‘This, then, is what I pray, kneeling before the Father, from whom every family, whether spiritual or natural, takes its name: Out of his infinite glory, may he give you the power through his Spirit for your hidden self to grow strong, so that Christ may live in your hearts through faith, and then, planted in love and built on love, you will with all the saints have the strength to grasp the breadth and the length, the height and the depth; until, knowing the love of Christ, which is beyond all knowledge you are filled with the utter fullness of God. Glory be to him whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine; glory be to him from generation to generation in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever. Amen.’
May the Lord bless you. May His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May He fill you with His love and peace.
Until we meet again. Fr. Eamonn O’Gorman.

29TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, Oct 17, 2010

Cardinal Newman, as a result of his recent beatification, has received great attention lately. It is well deserved. He was a profound thinker and much of what he had to say has a lot to offer us now. Therefore, on Monday, October 18 at 8pm in St. Patrick’s Parish Centre, Kilkenny, Rev. Dr. Thomas Norris will explore what it is that Cardinal Newman’s understanding of conscience can offer to our Church and Society today.
All men and women have a conscience, but not all act according to it: how easy it is, after all, in our world today to be talked out of our clearest duties. If we argue that the Pope and Conscience both come from God, and we do, then in the final analysis there cannot be a conflict between them. If Church and Society need to be built on the pillars of truth and justice, conscientious living is surely indispensable. Blessed John Henry Newman is renowned for his forward thinking on conscience in Church and Society and on Monday, October 18 we will have the opportunity to explore this together.

28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, Oct 10, 2010

It is time for me to see the flaws of myself
and stop being alarmed.

It is time for me to halt my drive for perfection
and to accept my blemishes.

It is time for me to receive slowly evolving growth.
the kind that comes in God’s own good time
and pays no heed to my panicky pushing.

It is time for me to embrace my humanness,
to love my incompleteness.

It is time for me to cherish the unwanted,
to welcome the unknown,
to treasure the unfulfilled.

If I wait to be perfect before I love myself,
I will always be unsatisfied and ungrateful.

If I wait until all the flaws, chips and cracks disappear,
I will be the cup that stands on the shelf and is never used.

PRAYER TO ST JOSEPH IN DIFFICULT TIMES
Great Saint Joseph throughout your life you were a man of boundless hope in the midst of all the difficulties you encountered – the painful circumstances surrounding the birth of Jesus, the flight into Egypt – your only source of strength was your unwavering hope in the goodness, the power and the faithfulness of God.
Today we come before you full of confidence. Since you are so close to God, please unite our prayers to yours. Ask your son to sustain us during the trails we are now facing.
Help us to move beyond our suffering by sharing with us that same strength that sustained you through you own trials. May hope be for us, as it was for you, a light in the darkness and a guide along the way every day of our life. Amen.

Our Sisters are working with other Religious in Pakistan to support the giving of immediate aid and also in providing houses for the many people, Muslim & Christian, who have been left homeless. Although the flood waters are beginning to slowly recede, the long term effects of the flooding will continue to be devastating for the people.

COSTING NO LESS THAN EVERYTHING
Sometimes love costs no less than everything.
Parents know this in bringing up children in love; and then it costs a lot to let them go, as they make their way through life, finding their own feet, forming their own families.
And the love of God opens the door to people who are poor; if we fail to recognise the poor in our world we are missing God.
And we know that a passion for wealth can close us off from other people as we fail to see their needs and get into competition with them.
The call of the Lord is to give of ourselves for others, even when it hurts; and into a love which shares with those who are poor.
His love calls us, and when we live in this love of giving and receiving, we are the most blessed of people.

GREATER POWER WATCHING
There was a nature show on television about a black bear that gave birth to two cubs. One cub died right away. Three weeks later the mother died and the remaining cub was left to fend for itself. An orphaned cub in that condition is like a walking buffet for predators. And of course the camera immediately showed a hungry-looking mountain lion. One day the orphan cub encountered a giant male black bear. The little cub cowered at the bear's sheer mass. The larger bear peered around and seemed to realize that the mother bear wasn't anywhere to be found. He gave the little cub a friendly nudge. The camera then showed the little bear happily trailing along after the larger one. The adoption papers were signed, sealed and registered at the county seat in that nudge. Papa bear proceeded to show the cub how to grub for insects and how to catch fish and how to scratch his back against a tree. One day the two bears became separated. The cub began to cry and looked frantically for his new father, but couldn't find him anywhere. The cub approached a stream where he'd learned to fish and something caught his attention. He looked up to see a mountain lion ready to pounce. That same mountain lion had stalked the cub for the entire show. There was no way that mountain lion would've gone for that cub with Papa bear around, but now....
The camera zoomed in on the cub. He automatically mimicked the posture of his adopted father when threatened. He stood on his hind legs and bared his teeth. Then, in the exactly the same way his new father would have done, this cub let loose a mighty growl that should have reverberated throughout the forest. But, only a tiny bear cub squeak came out. Well, you know what was coming. But, to everybody's astonishment the mountain lion lowered his head and ran off in the opposite direction. The camera panned back to the proud little cub still standing tall on his hind legs. And then all the viewers saw what that little cub Could Not: a few yards behind him, at full, ferocious height, his sharp, white teeth bared in a snarl, stood Daddy bear. He may not have made a sound, but he was there. And even though the cub couldn't see his father, his father stood guard, protecting his young. The little cub had power available greater than anything he could produce on his own. There was a greater power watching over him.
Jesus said: "They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them."

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, July 25, 2010

Every month is Mary’s month
Mary, the Mother of God is a perfect example
for all of us in carrying Jesus to others.

A reflection on Mary’s visit to her cousin Elizabeth
(Dr. Rowan Williams, Lourdes, September 2008)

Mary appears to us here as the first missionary,
the first human being to bring the Good News
of Jesus Christ to another;
and she does it simply
by carrying Christ within her.
She reminds us that mission begins
not in delivering a message in words
but in the journey towards another person
with Jesus in your heart.
Mary testifies to the primary importance
of simply carrying Jesus,
even before there are words or deeds
to show Him and explain Him.

ENCOURAGEMENT
Do not look forward to the changes and chances of this life in fear; rather look to them with full hope that as they arise, God – whose own you are – will deliver you out of them. He has kept you hitherto, do you but hold fast to His dear hand and He will lead you safely through all things; and when you cannot stand He will bear you safely in His arms. What need you fear, my child, remembering that you are God’s and that He has said, “All things work together for good to those who love him.” Do not look forward to what may happen tomorrow. The same everlasting Father who cares for you today will take care of you tomorrow and every day. Either He will shield you from suffering, or He will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace then. Put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations and say continually, “The Lord is my strength and my shield, my heart has trusted in Him and I am helped; He is not only with me but in me and I in Him.” What can a child fear surrounded by such a Father’s arms? St. Francis de Sales

THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, June 27, 2010

LIFE EXPLAINED
A boat docked in a tiny Mexican fishing village. A tourist complimented the local fishermen on the quality of their fish and asked how long it took them to catch them. "Not very long." they answered in unison. "Why didn't you stay out longer and catch more?" The fishermen explained that their small catches were sufficient to meet their needs and those of their families. "But what do you do with the rest of your time?" "We sleep late, fish a little, play with our children, and take siestas. In the evenings, we go into the village to see our friends, have a few drinks, play the guitar, and sing a few songs. We have a full life." The tourist interrupted, "I have an MBA from Harvard and I can help you! You should start by fishing longer every day. You can then sell the extra fish you catch. With the extra revenue, you can buy a bigger boat." "And after that?" "With the extra money the larger boat will bring, you can buy a second one and a third one and so on until you have an entire fleet of trawlers. Instead of selling your fish to a middle man, you can then negotiate directly with the processing plants and maybe even open your own plant. You can then leave this little village and move to Mexico City, Los Angeles, or even New York City! From there you can direct your huge new enterprise." "How long would that take?" "Twenty, perhaps twenty-five years." replied the tourist. "And after that?" "Afterwards? Well my friend, that's when it gets really interesting, " answered the tourist, laughing. "When your business gets really big, you can start buying and selling stocks and make millions!" "Millions? Really? And after that?" asked the fishermen. "After that you'll be able to retire, live in a tiny village near the coast, sleep late, play with your children, catch a few fish, take a siesta and spend your evenings drinking and enjoying your friends." And the moral of this story is:
Know where you're going in life...you may already be there!!

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER OF BLESSED MOTHER TERESA
O God, we believe that you are here. We adore You and love You with our whole heart and soul because You are most worthy of all our love. We desire to love you as the Blessed do in Heaven….

Flood our Souls with Your spirit and life. Penetrate and possess our whole being utterly, that our lives may only be a radiance of Yours. Shine through us, and be so in us, that every soul we come in contact with may feel Your presence in our soul. Let them look up and see no longer us, but only Jesus! Amen.

The fruit of silence is PRAYER
The fruit of prayer is FAITH
The fruit of faith is LOVE
The fruit of love is SERVICE
The fruit of service is PEACE

THE MOST HOLY TRINITY, 30 May 2010

I WISH I COULD BOTTLE THE INNOCENCE!

I attended the First Communion last Saturday
In the Church of the Assumption ..Mooncoin;
The girls and the boys looked so lovely
All the parents.. so warm.. so divine.

Father Eamonn and Father Dermot
Were so proud of each and everyone;
They invited us all to the hall there
To join them in having some fun.

A neighbour’s child ran over to me
Saying..”thank you so much for the money”;
Not a word did she mention about my lovely card
Ah sure that’s all right. I said..honey!

The innocent way it came from her
Sent me back in time through the years;
To the time long ago..when I was a boy
I’ll stop now..the eyes moist with tears.

The florin and half-crown I cherished
The ten shilling note made me rich;
Then mother took over these large notes
Saying: I’ll keep these..and buy you a stitch.

The tenner has now replaced ‘the tanner’
Twenty euro..now that’s not a lot;
The next thing they take out is the digital
While I still use the pencil to tot.

Confirmation was held here last Sunday
Once again the church was packed out;
Keep up the faith now everybody
Sure on seeing you all..I’ve no doubt.

This crisis we’ll overcome together
Let’s stop being negative.. right now;
Be positive..my friends..in all that you do
What the hell do we gain from each row!

Just think of that First Communion girl
With that innocence spread over her face;
May the good lord look after each one of them
I’ll finish..and go and say grace. (By Pat Kearns)
