A Word in your Ear: First Sunday of Advent 2011
John Shea, the great Christian storyteller relates the following Advent reflection. When God was making the trees, he gave a gift to each species. But first he set up a contest to determine which gift would be most useful to whom. He told them, “I want you to stay awake and keep watch over the earth for seven nights”. The young trees were so excited to be trusted with such an important task that the first night they would have found it difficult not to stay awake. However the second night was not so easy, and just before dawn a few fell asleep. On the third night the trees whispered among themselves in an effort to keep from dropping off. Even so it proved too much for some of them. Still more fell asleep on the fourth night. By the time the seventh night came the only trees still awake were the cedar, the pine, the spruce, the fir, the holly and the laurel. “What wonderful endurance you have!” God exclaimed. “You shall be given the gift of remaining green forever. You will be the guardians of the forest. Even in the seeming dead of winter, your brother and sister trees will find life protected in your branches.” Ever since then all the trees and plants lose their leaves and sleep all winter, while the evergreens stay awake.
This story illustrates the two great themes of Advent: wakefulness in the midst of sleepiness and greenness in the midst of barrenness. In the evergreen trees we find a note of gentle but resolute defiance. The surrounding world may be asleep and barren, but these continue to bear witness. They are sustained not so much by their own determination but by the power of God. They show us what our role as Christians is. It is to be awake among the sleeping, to be green in the midst the barren. To bear witness to love in the midst of hate, to peace in the midst of conflict, and to light in the midst of darkness.

LEARNING ABOUT THE MASS WITH KATH AND QUMEN HOW DOES MASS BEGIN?
Mass usually begins with a song or hymn and if we know the song we should join in the singing. The words of the song might be on a hymn sheet or book on your seat. When this song begins we know that it is time to stand up. We stand to greet the priest who will lead us in prayer; in this way we are also greeting Jesus who is present among us.
The Opening Procession
Mass always begins with a procession. There are different kinds of processions. Sometimes there are lots of people; sometimes it is the priest on his own. The procession might come from the front door or from the sacristy. Usually the procession includes the priest and the servers. In some places the people who are going to read and help to give out communion will also be in the procession. You might see one of the readers carry the book from which the Gospel will be read. This book is called the Book of the Gospels.

A Word in your Ear: The Bell is coming to Mooncoin!
As you know the 50th International Eucharistic Congress is being held in Dublin from June 10 - 17, 2012. One of the symbols of the congress is the Eucharistic Congress Bell. Since March 2011 the Congress Bell has been on pilgrimage through the various dioceses around Ireland. This pilgrimage of the bell is part of the preparation programme for the congress itself. The Congress Bell is coming to the Diocese of Ossory in January 2012 for ten days. The bell will be coming to Ossory from Waterford and so it has been decided that the first parish in our diocese to receive the bell will be Mooncoin. The bell will be with us for the afternoon of Sunday, January 8. Further details of this event will be announced in due course but please put this date in your diary as I hope that every family in the parish will participate in this unique occasion.
The significance of the bell as a symbol
The pilgrim journey of the Eucharistic Congress Bell is an opportunity for communities to come together drawn by the sound or the peal of the pilgrim Bell. Since antiquity the sound of a pealing bell has been a recognised means of communication, at times a warning that urges people to flee from pending danger and at other times inviting people to a communal gathering to receive news or perhaps to celebrate. A bell is a symbol that is both visible and audible. For Christians the bell has long been associated with the invitation to gather, the sound being perceived as God’s voice, God’s call, which draws people to assemble. For early Christian Ireland the sound of the bell of St. Patrick and other great saints across the land heralded the dawn of a new and eternal day for the Irish people - called to hear the good news - Jesus Christ, the Word made Flesh - and in turn become bearers of this news to others, far and near. The origin of the Diocese of Ossory is also linked to the ringing of a bell. Tradition has it that St. Kieran was given a bell by St. Patrick and he was told that wherever the bell would ring was to be the site of his monastery. The bell rang out in Saighir, Co. Offaly, known today as Seir Kieran. The image of the bell, associated today with Christmas and wedding cards, is still used to convey joy, celebration and the announcement of good news. Combined, the image and sound of the bell symbolise for us God’s call to all people to gather to hear good news.

Usually when we come into God’s house we bow our heads or go down on one knee. This is called ‘genuflection’. It shows respect and love for Jesus. We genuflect or bow in front of the tabernacle, the special place where Jesus is present at all times. The tabernacle may be behind the altar or to one side of it. There will be a red light near the tabernacle, called the Sanctuary Lamp. This light tells us that Jesus, the Blessed Sacrament, is present inside. The Blessed Sacrament is another name for Jesus.

CHRISTMAS FAIR IN MOONCOIN
It’s that time of year again. The Christmas Fair will be held in the Parish Hall on Sunday, December 4 starting at 1.30pm. All the usual stalls will be there. To help us, we are appealing for your support by arranging: Homemade Cakes, Buns, Fruit, Veg, Shrubs, Bottles & Toys, New or Unused Gift Items, Bric-a-Brac. Again last year we were saved the cost of a skip, as the items donated were all of reliable quality. The proceeds of the Christmas Fair go towards the upkeep of the Parish Hall. During the year a new ramp has been installed at the front door, a completely new stage has been built, timber around the perimeter of the floor has been replaced with new wood and new flooring has been laid in the Supper Room and kitchen. In addition, non-slip floors have been installed where it was deemed necessary.
Your support and generosity makes this possible. During the month of November tickets are also on sale for the needs of the Hall. This year the prizes include 32” Flat Screen TV and or Toshiba Laptop, amongst the other great prizes. We ask you to support this effort by buying tickets, asking €2 for 1, or €5 for a book of 3.

PREPARING THE CHURCH FOR MASS
The sacristan is a very important person in church. He, or she opens and closes the building, makes sure that it is warm and welcoming, prepares the altar, lights the candles, puts out the necessary books and things needed for the Mass and makes sure that there are enough candles, wine and altar breads for Mass. In most parishes there are people who look after The cleaning of the church. They also make sure that there are flowers to decorate the altar. They may put up the crib at Christmas and decorate the church building for special occasions.

Kilkenny Community Forum in conjunction with the Federation of Community Groups will hold the Piltown Electoral Area meeting in Piltown Community Centre on Monday 14th November 2011 at 8p.m. The meeting will be chaired by Fr. Nicholas Flavin Chairperson of the Community and Voluntary Forum. A discussion will take place on the Development of the South and also on Insurance for Community Groups. It’s that time of year again. The Christmas Fair will be held in the Parish Hall on Sunday, December 4 starting at 1.30pm. All the usual stalls will be there. To help us, we are appealing for your support by arranging: Homemade Cakes, Buns, Fruit, Veg, Shrubs, Bottles & Toys, New or Unused Gift Items, Bric-a-Brac. Again last year we were saved the cost of a skip, as the items donated were all of reliable quality. The proceeds of the Christmas Fair go towards the upkeep of the Parish Hall. During the year a new ramp has been installed at the front door, a completely new stage has been built, timber around the perimeter of the floor has been replaced with new wood and new flooring has been laid in the Supper Room and kitchen. In addition, non-slip floors have been installed where it was deemed necessary.
Your support and generosity makes this possible. During the month of November tickets are also on sale for the needs of the Hall. This year the prizes include 32” Flat Screen TV and or Toshiba Laptop, amongst the other great prizes. We ask you to support this effort by buying tickets, asking €2 for 1, or €5 for a book of 3.
It would be impossible to update the hall without your continued generosity and support. Thank you all very much.
LEARNING ABOUT THE MASS WITH KATH AND QUMEN
PREPARING THE CHURCH FOR MASS
The sacristan is a very important person in church. He, or she opens and closes the building, makes sure that it is warm and welcoming, prepares the altar, lights the candles, puts out the necessary books and things needed for the Mass and makes sure that there are enough candles, wine and altar breads for Mass. In most parishes there are people who look after The cleaning of the church. They also make sure that there are flowers to decorate the altar. They may put up the crib at Christmas and decorate the church building for special occasions.

Kilkenny Community Forum in conjunction with the Federation of Community Groups will hold the Piltown Electoral Area meeting in Piltown Community Centre on Monday 14th November 2011 at 8p.m. The meeting will be chaired by Fr. This book is published by the Irish Hospice Foundation and edited by Susan Delaney (no relation!). This first reflection is a beautiful poem by Seamus Heaney.

Mid-Term Break
I sat all morning in the college sick bay
Counting bells knelling classes to a close.
At two o'clock our neighbours drove me home.
In the porch I met my father crying -
He had always taken funerals in his stride -
And Big Jim Evans saying it was a hard blow.
The baby cooed and laughed and rocked the pram
When I came in, and I was embarrassed
By old men standing up to shake my hand
And tell me they were "sorry for my trouble,"
Whispers informed strangers I was the eldest,
Away at school, as my mother held my hand
In hers and coughed out angry tearless sighs.
At ten o'clock the ambulance arrived
With the corpse, stanched and bandaged by the nurses.
Next morning I went up into the room. Snowdrops
And candles soothed the bedside; I saw him
For the first time in six weeks. Paler now,
Wearing a poppy bruise on his left temple,
He lay in the four foot box as in his cot.
No gaudy scars, the bumper knocked him clear.

At every Mass you will notice that some members of the assembly have different jobs. We call these jobs ‘ministries’. Let’s look at some more of them:
THE COLLECTORS: The people who collect our gift of money during Mass.
THE MINISTER OF THE EUCHARIST: The person who helps to give out communion at Mass. They sometimes bring communion to those who are unable to come to Mass because they are sick.
MUSIC: Many parishes have choirs – groups of people who sing at Mass. Their singing helps the whole assembly to pray and we are all encouraged to join with the choir. Some parishes may have people who lead the assembly in singing. These are called cantors.

HALLOWEEN – ALL SAINTS – ALL SOULS
When you think of Halloween, what comes to mind? For a lot of people, Halloween has become synonymous with sweets, bracks, costumes, scary stuff, witches, ghosts and pumpkins. But do you know the Christian connection to the holiday?
The true origins of Halloween lie with the ancient Celtic tribes who lived in Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Brittany. For the Celts, November 1 marked the beginning of a new year and the coming of winter. The night before the new year, they celebrated the festival of Samhain, Lord of the Dead. During this festival, Celts believed the souls of the dead including ghosts, goblins and witches returned to mingle with the living. In order to scare away the evil spirits, people would wear masks and light bonfires.
When the Romans conquered the Celts, they added their own touches to the Samhain festival, such as making centerpieces out of apples and nuts for Pomona, the Roman goddess of the orchards. The Romans also bobbed for apples and drank cider traditions which may sound familiar to you. But where does the Christian aspect of the holiday come into play? In 835, Pope Gregory IV moved the celebration for all the martyrs (later all saints) from May 13 to November 1. The night before became known as All Hallows Even, or holy evening. Eventually the name was shortened to the current Halloween. On November 2, the Church celebrates All Souls Day.
The purpose of these feasts is to remember those who have died, whether they are officially recognized by the Church as saints or not. It is a celebration of the communion of saints which reminds us that the Church is not bound by space or time.

WHO DOES WHAT AT MASS (1)?
At every Mass you will notice that some members of the assembly have different jobs. We call these jobs ‘ministries’. Let’s look at some of them:
THE PRIEST: At Mass the priest leads us and encourages us to play our part in the celebration. How does he do this? He:
• Leads us in prayer
• Invites us to listen to God’s word
• Helps us to understand and make sense
of the Word of God in our daily lives through his homily
• Takes our gifts, the bread and wine, offers them to God and prays that by the power of the Holy
Spirit they will become the body and blood of Jesus Christ.
THE SERVERS: Servers are normally boys and girls who have received their First Communion. Their job is to help the priest during Mass. They can carry books, bring water and wine, wash the priest’s hands and ring bells.
MINISTER OF THE WORD: Even though we sometimes call this person the reader, the proper name is ‘Minister of the Word’. The readings of Mass come from the Bible. They are the Word of God and so we can say that we hear God speaking to us through the voice of the Minister of the Word.
Marfan Syndrome Research & Cardiac Surgery in Ireland
Friday, November 4, Kilmacow Community Centre at 7.30pm: Professor Mark Redmond and Doctors Jonathan McGuinness, John Byrne and Darren McLaughlin will give a presentation on Marfan Syndrome Research and Cardiac Surgery in Ireland. Prof Redmond is a renowned cardio thoracic surgeon in The Mater Hospital, Beacon Hospital & Crumlin Children’s Hospital. Dr Jonathan McGuinness is a cardio thoracic surgeon at the Mater Hospital. Dr’s John Byrne & Darren McLaughlin are closely involved with Prof Redmond in Marfan research. This promises to be an interesting and informative presentation. Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome. This evening is hosted by The Marfans Research Foundation, Kilmacow.
South Kilkenny Historical Society
Next lecture will be held on Thurs Nov 3 at 8pm in the Parochial Hall, Mullinavat. The title of the lecture is “Margar Aylward: a controversial and courageous woman with a mission” and it will be given by Dr. Jacinta Prunty, a Holy Faith sister and senior lecturer in the Department of History, National University of Ireland. M.D.A.P.P. Drug and Alcohol Awareness Programme will not be held next Monday night October 31 due to the bank holiday. It will resume again on November 7 at 8pm and will run for the next 6 weeks in the Boys’ School.

In 835, Pope Gregory IV moved the celebration for all the martyrs (later all saints) from May 13 to November 1. The night before became known as All Hallows Even, or holy evening. Eventually the name was shortened to the current Halloween. On November 2, the Church celebrates All Souls Day.
The purpose of these feasts is to remember those who have died, whether they are officially recognized by the Church as saints or not. It is a celebration of the communion of saints which reminds us that the Church is not bound by space or time.

LEARNING ABOUT THE MASS WITH KATH AND QUMEN
WHO DOES WHAT AT MASS (1)?
At every Mass you will notice that some members of the assembly have different jobs. We call these jobs ‘ministries’. Let’s look at some of them:
THE PRIEST: At Mass the priest leads us and encourages us to play our part in the celebration. How does he do this? He:
• Leads us in prayer
• Invites us to listen to God’s word
• Helps us to understand and make sense
of the Word of God in our daily lives through his homily
• Takes our gifts, the bread and wine, offers them to God and prays that by the power of the Holy
Spirit they will become the body and blood of Jesus Christ.
THE SERVERS: Servers are normally boys and girls who have received their First Communion. Their job is to help the priest during Mass. They can carry books, bring water and wine, wash the priest’s hands and ring bells.
MINISTER OF THE WORD: Even though we sometimes call this person the reader, the proper name is ‘Minister of the Word’. The readings of Mass come from the Bible. They are the Word of God and so we can say that we hear God speaking to us through the voice of the Minister of the Word.
Marfan Syndrome Research & Cardiac Surgery in Ireland
Friday, November 4, Kilmacow Community Centre at 7.30pm: Professor Mark Redmond and Doctors Jonathan McGuinness, John Byrne and Darren McLaughlin will give a presentation on Marfan Syndrome Research and Cardiac Surgery in Ireland. Prof Redmond is a renowned cardio thoracic surgeon in The Mater Hospital, Beacon Hospital & Crumlin Children’s Hospital. Dr Jonathan McGuinness is a cardio thoracic surgeon at the Mater Hospital. Dr’s John Byrne & Darren McLaughlin are closely involved with Prof Redmond in Marfan research. This promises to be an interesting and informative presentation. Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome. This evening is hosted by The Marfans Research Foundation, Kilmacow.

Next lecture will be held on Thurs Nov 3 at 8pm in the Parochial Hall, Mullinavat. The title of the lecture is “Margar Aylward: a controversial and courageous woman with a mission” and it will be given by Dr. Jacinta Prunty, a Holy Faith sister and senior lecturer in the Department of History, National University of Ireland. The monthly Mass of St. Joseph’s Young Priests Society will take place on Thursday, November 3 at 9.30am in Mooncoin. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament for intercession for vocations will follow immediately afterwards in the Nagle Chapel and will conclude at 11am. All are welcome.

Mooncoin parish has given more than its fair share of missionaries over the years and on this special day they unite with us spiritually.

LEARNING ABOUT THE MASS WITH KATH AND QUMEN
WHY GO TO MASS?
When you were baptised you became a member of God’s family and we call that the Church. You might think the church is just a building but the Church is also the name we give to the people who gather in the building. Without the people, the Church would be just another building. One of the most important things we do as part of God’s family is go to Mass.
A WORD IN YOUR EAR
This weekend we begin the formal preparation with the children who will celebrate their First Communion next May. The programme will involve a Mass once a month (Saturday evening in Mooncoin and Sunday morning in Carrigeen). These will be the regular Sunday Masses, but with a real awareness that children are present. The readings and some prayers will be simplified and the homily will (hopefully!) be directed to the children, or even through the children to everyone else! This weekend the homily at the 6.30pm and 10am Masses will be replaced by the enrolment ceremony.
Each week we will publish a little insert in The Grapevine entitled Learning about the Mass with Kath and Qumen . Kath and Qumen are two children preparing for their First Communion and they feature in the book which our children have called THUMB. The names Kath and Qumen are a play on the word ‘cathecumen’. A cathecumen is strictly understood as someone preparing for Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. We are taking some liturgical and catechetical licence here, because our First Communion candidates have already been baptised. They are, however, being prepared for the next important step on their journey of initiation. Speaking of initiation we heard this week that Confirmation will be celebrated here in the parish on Sunday, February 26, 2012.
