28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, October 09, 2011

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
KNOW THE SHEPHERD
The psalm to be read at this weekend’s masses is perhaps the best known and best loved psalm of all; psalm 23, The Lord is my shepherd. I recently came across the following story which might give us pause for reflection this week.
Some time ago a great actor in the city of New York gave a wonderful performance in a large theatre, at the close of which there were rounds of applause. He was called back again and again. Finally someone called to him, “Would you do for us the Twenty-third Psalm?” “Why yes, I know the Twenty-third Psalm.” He recited it as an actor would, perfectly, with nothing left to be desired as far as a performance was concerned. When he was finished, again there was thunderous applause. Then the actor came to the front of the stage and said; “Ladies and gentlemen, there is an old man sitting here on the front row whom I happen to know. I am going to ask him without any notice if he will come and repeat the Twenty-third Psalm.”
The elderly gentleman, of course, was frightened. Trembling, he came to the stage. Fearfully he looked out over the vast audience. Then, as though he were at home only with one, he closed his eyes against the audience, bowed his head, and talked to God, and said:
“The Lord is my shepherd: I shall not want…” When the old man finished, there was no applause, but there was not a dry eye in that house. The actor came to the front of the stage and said, “Ladies and gentlemen, I know the words of the Twenty-third Psalm, but this man knows the Shepherd”

SPARE A THOUGHT FOR THE PRIEST!
If a priest preaches for ten minutes, he’s longwinded.
If his sermon is short, he didn’t prepare it.
If the parish funds are high, he’s a businessman.
If he mentions money, he’s money mad.
If he visits his parishioners, he’s nosy.
If he doesn’t, he’s snobbish.
If he has fairs and bazaars, he’s bleeding the people.
If he doesn’t, there’s no life in the parish.
If he takes time in confession to help and advise sinners, he takes too long.
If he doesn’t, he doesn’t care.
If he celebrates the liturgy in a quiet voice, he’s a bore.
If he puts feeling in to it, he’s an actor.
If he starts Mass on time, his watch is fast.
If he starts late, he’s holding up the people.
If he tries to lead the people in music, he’s showing off.
If he doesn’t, he doesn’t care what Mass is like.
If he decorates the church, he’s wasting money.
If he doesn’t, he’s letting it run down.
If he’s young, he’s not experienced.
If he’s old, he ought to retire.
If he dies, there was nobody like him and there will never be his equal again!

27th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, October 02, 2011

I have come among you in less than ideal circumstances, but I am very happy to be here. This has been a difficult week for the parish of Mooncoin. I am conscious that there is an entire spectrum of feelings and emotions across the community: shock, sadness, sympathy, hurt, anger and confusion. I promise you that I will do my utmost to walk with you at this time and to serve the needs of this Christian community to the best of my ability. I have long been aware of the rich tradition and strength of identity that exists in Mooncoin, Carrigeen and Kilnaspic and I am confident that, in working together in the spirit of the gospel, we will move beyond the darkness of these days.
I am deeply grateful to the Pastoral council, the Parish staff, the Presentation sisters and the many other parishioners who have extended a warm and generous welcome to me this week. I know that I have your prayerful support as I begin my ministry here, but I also commend to your prayers Fr. Peter and all those who are affected by this sad situation.
I am conscious that many of you did not get an opportunity to hear Bishop Freeman’s statement last weekend and so on the suggestion of the Pastoral Council it is included here in its entirety.
Fr. Martin Delaney

STATEMENT BY BISHOP FREEMAN
A safeguarding matter has arisen and Fr Peter Muldowney, a priest of the Diocese of Ossory, has asked me to allow him a period of leave from ministry with immediate effect so that this matter can be addressed. I have adhered to this request. In compliance with our Diocesan Policy on Safeguarding, this matter has been referred to An Garda Siochana, the HSE and to the National Board for Safeguarding Children. The presumption of innocence must prevail. There can be no further comment until this matter has been clarified by the Civil Authorities. I ask you for your prayers for all concerned. I have appointed Father Martin Delaney Administrator of the parish of Mooncoin and he will take up duties with immediate effect.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
Scared and sacred are spelled with the same letters. Awful proceeds from the same root word as awesome. Terrify and terrific. Every negative experience holds the seed of transformation – Alan Cohen
A friend of mine had an interview recently where one of the interviewers stated that it was amazing how she was able to turn every negative event in her life into a positive experience. For myself I have found that my most precious learning has been from those times when I thought that my world was crashing down around my eyes.
One of my most helpful poems at such times is “Footprints” which is a poem about Jesus walking with someone across a beach, thus there are two sets of footprints in the sand. During an especially trying period the person looks back and complains that Jesus left them just when they needed him the most only to be told that that was the time that Jesus had carried them.
Belief in God and self helps me to change my scared times in sacred times. The awful times in awesome times and the terrifying times into terrific times. None of it comes easy, or instant, but takes time of reflections, learning and the willingness to look at things in a different way.
My prayer for you this day
is that you are willing to look at your life’s journey that changes negative experiences to periods of positive transformation.

The Kilkenny Fire Officer on his own behalf and on behalf of all the fire crew who fought the fire in the furniture shop in Mooncoin would like to give a sincere word of thanks to all who helped in any way. A special word of thanks to Ann Dobbyn, Kathleen O’Driscoll & Rose Mahon who provided tea and refreshments. Our thoughts and prayers are with the owner and his family.

POSITIVE AGEING WEEK
What is Positive Ageing Week?
Positive Ageing is the term that we have chosen to encapsulate all we are trying to do to make Ireland the best place in which to grow old. It means a society in which people of all ages enjoy the same status and rights. Positive Ageing Week is a festival which highlights the positive aspects of ageing and celebrates the contribution older people have made and continue to make to their communities. The central aim of Positive Ageing Week is to dispel the many negative perceptions that surround ageing and to transform attitudes towards ageing and older people. We need to celebrate the fact that we are living longer, that ageing is not a burden, but an opportunity. We wish to thank all the ageing people of our community and wish them long life, health & happiness.
As part of Positive Ageing Week, Mooncoin Residential Care Centre is inviting you to join with us celebrating Mass on Thursday, September 29 at 2.30pm, followed by Tea and Cakes. All proceeds to Age Action Ireland.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
The purpose of our lives is to give birth to the best
which is within us. – Marianne Williamson
There are so many challenges and demands in our lives that sometimes, at least I do, that we get so busy that we forget our true purpose – that purpose is to be the person that God has created us to be. In my life’s journey I usually have two problems that are similar but different - one I often times get myself running so fast that I forget that I have to take time to reflect on what it is that God actually wants me to be doing - although I am getting better at that (sometimes). The second is that I often forget that BEING all I am intended to be is not all about doing - it is about being. Being on the inside - taking time to stop, listen and hear what my heart is saying. Taking time to stop and sweep out the garbage that collects on the bottom of your heart from the debris that people and life tosses at me. Being in the silence to listen to God’s voice - words of comfort, words of joy, words of wisdom, words of challenge, words that are whispered so quietly that if I am not listening they are missed.

COLLECTIONS
Over the last few months, the Sunday collections have fallen a lot. Guess it is understandable in the present climate. However, it has come to our notice, there is sometimes one or two collections on the way in and that some people stand in the gateway. I wish to take this opportunity to remind all those who collect outside the church that the law states “that collections will not be taken up within a distance of twenty meters of all entrances to church property” (Collection Act 1962). We, the finance committee, ask all collectors to observe this legal requirement and that all collections taking place would be published on the grapevine the week before. Our insurance bill for Sept 2011 - 2012 this year comes to €7,223.09. Costs are going up every month. While we think globally we have to act locally. Thanking you in anticipation for your co-operation in relation to those matters.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
The Democratic Party Leader J. Layton in Canada who died of cancer recently wrote in a letter the week before he died:
“My friends, love is better than anger, hope is better than fear,
optimism is better than despair, so let us be loving, hopeful and
optimistic and we will change the world”
A lot of wisdom in those words!

The Revised Roman Missal
On November 27 – The First Sunday in Advent, will mark a significant change for the Catholic Church in Ireland and throughout the whole world. On that day, we will being to use the Roman Missal, Third Edition. This is the third revision of the ritual text that contains the prayers and instructions for the Celebration of the Mass. The implementation of this new edition of the Roman Missal provides each of us with a unique gift – an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the sacred liturgy, to reflect on and to appreciate it’s meaning and importance in our lives. As we move forward in the process of implementing this new resource, it is our hope that we will come to a renewed awareness that “What we pray is what we believe”. We will begin during the month of September to use some of the new responses.

We would like to wish the Kilkenny Team the very best of luck on Sunday. We hope that everyone will enjoy the day & that anyone travelling up to Croke Park will have
a safe journey.

THE PARISH OFFICE

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
If you’ve been shown mercy & forgiveness by those whom you’ve wronged, don’t hinder the ripple effect.
Show mercy & forgiveness to others who’ve wronged you.
It is much easier to turn a friendship into love
than love into friendship.

Children…. Good News….. Schools after the summer holidays open next week!
The Girls’ & Boys’ School open on Tuesday, August 30.
Carrigeen School on Thursday, September 1.
Wishing all our pupils and students the very best for the school year 2011 – 2012. Enjoy the learning and the fun. With prayers and best wishes to pupils, teachers and all who work in the school system.

CONGRATULATIONS
To all our Leaving Certificate students, we wish you all the very best and every blessing as you embark on a new and exciting stage of your lives. May God the Holy Spirit be your guide and protector.

MARRYING ABROAD?
Couples who intend to marry abroad and who make arrangements to do so with the help of a travel company should, like all couples, make contact with their parish in good time to give notice of marriage, to undertake the normal marriage preparation and to carry out the necessary church formalities (that is to establish their freedom to marry). This applies also to mixed marriages. Couples intending to marry abroad should give more notice than usual, as the legal procedures involved in a foreign marriage take a considerable amount of time.

A sincere word of thanks to Theresa Finn who was our parish secretary for 1½ years. We wish you every success and blessing as you go back to college. Thank you for your patience, skill and service.
Welcome to Ann Croke our new secretary – we look forward to working with you and serving the people of the parish. God’s blessing and peace be with you both.

We wish you continued success and many graces and blessings in the future.

We the finance committee ask all collectors to observe this legal requirement and that all collections taking place would be published on the grapevine the week before. Our insurance bill for Sept 2011 – 2012 this year comes to €7,223.09. Costs are going up every month. While we think globally we have to act locally. Thanking you in anticipation for your co-operation in relation to those matters.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
Our daily lives can easily become filled with stress, pressure and confusion. But we can stop at any moment and slip away into the presence of God’s spirit through prayer, reflection and meditation, and there find peace and refreshing.
‘Be still and know that I am God.
All the earth proclaim in the Lord. Sing your praise to God’.
Wishing you all a very happy and joy filled and safe summer. Drive with care – life has no spare.

VIATORES CHRISTI

Also we were delighted to receive some enquiries from people who may be interested in joining our lay missionary preparatory programme, with the view to going overseas, or getting involved in voluntary work here at home. The U6’s opened with their first club match Thursday last in Slieverue. It was a very enjoyable evening for both child and parent, we look forward to their next match. The U8’s also attended and they too performed very well on the evening. They are all looking forward to the Mooncoin U8 blitz in early July. The U10 team is progressing nicely having competed in the Kilkenny ‘Go Games’ and the Ballyduff upper U10 tournament, which took place over two weekends. The lads enjoyed going to west Waterford to compete. Thanks to Centra, a number of our U10’s had the opportunity to train with Henry Shefflin and John Mullane last Saturday morning at Nowlan Park. The two lads were great giving their time to training and talking to our future stars. The U11 team is still involved in the Waterford city league with one round of matches to be played. They are competing in the A league and are performing well. Our U12’s took part in the Tullogher tournament taking honours over Mullinavat on the last day. The Kilkenny U12 league begins on July 23. Best of luck lads. The primary schools were beaten in the quarter final against Thomastown. They had a fantastic league campaign, but were beaten by the better team on the day.
